While driving along on our trip, I collect GPS data and correlate it with some OBD (on-board diagnostics) data from my Jeep. For this I use software called obdgpslogger. Periodically, I run a process to convert the data into KML, which is a geographic visualization format. The map shown on this page is a rendering of the KML data in Google Maps, but you can also view it in Google Earth by clicking directly on the KML file.
So far the raw data file is about ten megabytes and the processed KML data file is about five megabytes. Already that is too large, so I will probably have to split it up into a few pieces, but I have not done that yet.
