Wow, It Is Hot In Las Vegas

I will try to post some pictures from Las Vegas later, but for now I want to mention how damn hot it is in Las Vegas. Weather.com says it is 106 degrees but the last person I talked to said she had heard 117 degrees. We were out doing chores today and when we returned to Eduardo's air-conditioned apartment, it was like a blast of refreshing cold air. Then we checked the thermostat and it was set at 78 degrees! So 78 degrees was like an icy cool breeze.

Our chores today included going to an RV service shop to get the tail lights fixed. Two nites ago, we discovered as we drove in the darkness that our tail lights didn't light up when we turned on our headlights. I used my multimeter to test the seven pins on the seven-pin electrical trailer connector, and my best guess was that the headlight/taillight signal simply was not coming out of the connector. To my satisfaction, the service mechanic agreed. He investigated further and told me the taillights and the battery connection were never installed in the first place.

Mike Hatch Jeep in Juneau, Alaska did that wiring for me three weeks ago. Apparently, they wired up the brake lights and the blinkers, then stopped before completing the wiring by connecting the battery and the taillights. I am fairly put out by that incomplete service, and contacted Mike Hatch about the issue. I am expecting a response from them, and I certainly hope and expect that they will apologize and pay the $260 cost.

We also dropped by a bike shop to get some simple repairs done. The bike mechanic clearly thought we were fools coming in for such trivial adjustments, but he cheerfully inserted us in his repair schedule right away. I watched him fix the bikes up, and he seemed to be embarrassed to ask me for $10; I gave him $15 and my sincere thanks. That price is inexpensive for the enjoyment I get out of my bike.

Finally we went to the local AAA office and got some maps. We needed some maps to get us across to the other side of the country. I do not have all the right maps because our route has been changing as we have traveled along it.

Our original route took us through the deep south: New Orleans, Georgia, Alabama. We have been watching the temperatures and we do not want to be in that kind of heat (or this kind of heat!). Our plans have changed so that we avoid Mesa, Arizona and instead cut a little bit north, through a forest where we will see Dad and Kathleen. We have tickets to see Carlsbad Caverns, which is still a bit south, but after that we have five days to get to Great Smokey Mountains, and we will probably choose as cool a route as possible, in the cool-temperature sense.
